First-timers age 7-17
We are exploring the effects of self-help conferences for
Children and Teens Who Stutter
We need you to complete a 20-minute survey:
(A) before the conference
(B) 10-14 days later
(C) 3 months later
Parents attending the National Stuttering Association conference,
My name is Mitch Trichon. I am an adult who stutters who has been a volunteer for the National Stuttering Association (NSA) for over 10 years. You are receiving this email because you are registered as a first-timer at the upcoming NSA conference. I work in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department at St. John’s University in Queens, NY. My research focuses on self-help activities for people who stutter and how it may or may not play in the role of stuttering management.
I am currently working on a study which uses age-appropriate surveys to learn about children’s and teens’ (age 7 -17) experience of stuttering. The study requires your child to complete a survey and a few other basic questions before the conference, 10-14 days after the conference, and 3 months after the conference. The survey takes about 15-20 minutes to complete. There is very limited opportunity to collect this type of data so your permission and child’s participation would be greatly appreciated. Knowledge gained from the study will help guide stuttering management for children and teens. Participants in the study will receive $5.00 (or more) of raffle tickets to be used at the conference. I have attached a recruitment flyer for your review.
Please call my cell phone at 917-334-7646 if you have any questions. If you would like to participate please email (firstname.lastname@example.org ): (a) your name, (b) mailing address, (c) phone number, and (d) (a) the age of your child who stutters. This information is confidential and will only be used for the purposes of this study. I will immediately mail you (a) a parent permission form – 2 copies (one to sign, one to keep); (b) a participant information form; (c) an age-appropriate survey; and (d) a self-addressed and stamped envelope.
I look forward to meeting you at the conference. This study has been approved by National Stuttering Association Research Committee and St. John’s University Institutional Review Board. Once again, your participation would be greatly appreciated.
